Question on Lifeguard SMTP setup

Postby Edward » Sat Sep 13, 2014 8:01 am

Is there a way to configure Lifeguard firmware v2.0 to NOT use an SMTP username / password for email notifications? I've got WLAN APs, printers, other devices sending alerts via SMTP, all of which can be configured to use authenticated SMTP, or NOT. I use IMAP/SSL for mail clients, not authenticated SMTP. I really don't want to reconfigure the server. I just want Lifeguard to use very basic, unauthenticated SMTP. Is there a way to provide for this very ordinary situation?

On why I believe this is is an authenticated SMTP issue, I'm able to telnet to port 25 on my mailserver, manually input a test message. This works fine. For Lifeguard with no SSL, and blanks for username and password, my mailserver returns an SMTP error code 503. 503 translates to either "bad sequence of commands" (sent from Lifeguard, which hopefully isn't the case), or "authentication not enabled" (e.g., the mailserver doesn't support authentication). If I telnet to port 25, (helo), then (auth), I get "503 5.5.1 Error: authentication not enabled" from the server.

If v2.0 doesn't support this, can v2.1 be made smart enough to NOT send an SMTP "auth" command when the username and password fields are blank??

OK, here's a debug trace, confirming Lifeguard is sending an SMTP "auth" command.
